When an SCR system fails, the vehicle can become unusable by software decision. For owners facing repeated AdBlue faults, deactivation, often called “AdBlue OFF”, can look like a quick solution. It is not a repair. It is a modification that removes the emissions-control function.
What disabling the SCR means
Disabling the SCR system is illegal for use on open roads. The vehicle no longer meets its emissions approval. This is not a matter of interpretation: the vehicle is no longer compliant with the pollution-control requirements it was built to respect.
That non-compliance follows the vehicle. The vehicle becomes non-compliant for the roadworthiness test and cannot be sold as it is. The owner remains responsible for a vehicle that cannot legally be used on the road in its modified state.
What is lost for your legal recourse
Many AdBlue failures affect recent diesel vehicles. The 1.5 BlueHDi engine (DV5) used across much of the Peugeot, Citroën, and Opel range is one example where SCR faults and mechanical issues have been reported by owners. - Ammonia smell from the exhaust, which indicates poor atomization by the AdBlue injector.
Document these signs with photos and request a preventive diagnostic. If the garage refuses or downplays the issue, that record is proof of their inaction if a later total failure occurs.
Why the registry matters
An AdBlue OFF solution does not restore the vehicle’s compliance or preserve the evidence needed for a claim. It adds legal and resale consequences to a defect.
