Haldex and DSG: two separate oil services — check both on the invoice

The DSG gearbox and the Haldex coupling are not the same system, even when they appear together in the same service schedule. They have separate oils, separate filters or screens, and separate intervals. A service invoice that shows a DSG oil change does not prove that the Haldex unit has been serviced.

Two separate oil services

In Volkswagen Group models with DSG and Haldex transmission — VW, Audi, Škoda, Seat — the DSG gearbox and the Haldex coupling each need their own maintenance. The Haldex unit controls the 4WD drive. On fifth-generation Haldex units, also used by Volvo and Land Rover, the former removable filter was replaced by a simple mesh screen. That screen protects the pump from clutch debris.

If the Haldex oil is never renewed, clutch wear particles build up. The contamination becomes a thick sludge, the screen becomes blocked, and the pump motor burns out. The fault code associated with this failure is C111204. A DSG oil change does nothing to prevent it.

A maintenance schedule that leaves the pump exposed

The risk comes from the maintenance schedule itself. The oil is sometimes described as “filled for life,” and the cleaning of the screen is not included in routine services. A service that follows that schedule can be presented as complete while the Haldex pump is being degraded by old, contaminated oil.

The practical signs are familiar: sudden loss of traction, for example on snow, or an AWD error message. The pump can fail at 60,000 km if the maintenance is skipped.

Check the invoice

Do not assume a full service includes the Haldex. Ask the workshop to state on the invoice which Haldex service was done, and the mileage at which it was done. If the invoice does not mention Haldex oil, the Haldex unit may not have been serviced.

• Look for a line that says Haldex oil change.
• Confirm the interval for your model.
• Keep the invoice as proof for the next owner.
